Architecture & memorials

Every location, even the tiniest of villages, has its own special story to tell and our region is certainly no exception. Alongside historic events and occurrences, historical buildings, town and city centres and monuments all play a role in shaping the development of a location and its residents.

A prime example of the documentation of more recent historical experiences can be found in the Marienborn – Hötensleben area, where the inner German border once created a divide between previously coexisting people in what was one single region. After German reunification, a long section of the border fortifications next to the town of Hötensleben were preserved in their original state as a reminder of times that should never be forgotten. The main area of the former border checkpoint in Marienborn is now home to the Memorial of German Division (Gedenkstätte Deutsche Teilung), a strong reminder of recent history.
